The Finsterbach is an approximately 2 km long brook in the areas of the small towns of Vellberg and Ilshofen in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in north-eastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows westward in its blade from the left into the lower Schmerach .

geography

course

The Finsterbach arises a little west of the K 2668 between the Vellberger village Großaltdorf in the south and the Ilshofener village Oberaspach in the north at about 410  m above sea level. NHN in Feldgewann Oberer Finsterbach . There, next to a farm road running northwards, begins a long, very gently sloping ditch running westward in a strip of grass, which after about 300 meters passes a small wood and then crosses under another field path in the same direction. Between the Fräuleswiesen fields on the right and Unterer Finsterbach, the ditch runs westward for another half a kilometer without trees or bushes on the bank.

From the southeast, a dirt road accompanied by a ditch less than 400 meters long then reaches the stream and then follows it in its direction. Less than a hundred meters further, a much shorter stream flows from the other side and northeast, which rises from the hillside source of Romigsbrunnen . Two hundred meters down, the Finsterbach crosses the K 2601 from Ilshofen- Großstadel to Ilshofen- Unteraspach , after which there are sporadic trees and bushes on the bank.

Just two hundred meters after crossing this road, the Finsterbach reaches about 385  m above sea level. NHN the edge of the forest around the Schmerachblade. There it flows more naturally than before and with small changes of direction under trees in a width of one to two meters above a sandy-gravel bed and now deepens into a somewhat meandering side blade of the Schmerach, in which it flows under up to 20 meters high, partly falls down even overhanging limestone rocks in a multi-tiered waterfall repeated over ledges, whose foot he sometimes pools has dug. A side gorge, which is less than 200 meters long and begins with a basin, runs towards this area from the southeast. Finally the stream flows out at about 303  m above sea level. NHN from the left and east into the lower Schmerach , below the embankment of the farm road running in the Schmerachklinge and a little in front of the grill meadow in Untertal.

The Finsterbach flows after a 2.2 km long run with an average bed gradient of about 48 ‰, about 107 meters in altitude below its beginning. About three quarters of the total gradient is accounted for by the almost one kilometer long lower course in Wald und Klinge.

Catchment area

The Finsterbach has a catchment area of about 2.1 km², which is about 2.4 km long from east to west and at most half as wide. In terms of natural space , it is located in the lower area of the Haller level of the Hohenlohe and Haller levels . The with about 429  m above sea level. NHN's highest point is in the northeast corner on the hill Aspacher Höhe . Adjacent catchment areas are in the north that of the Hohteichbach , which runs roughly in the same direction to the Schmerach, that of the Razenbach in the east, which feeds the Bühler via the Aalenbach , and that of the brook through the Kappisklinge , which is also in shortly before the Finsterbach-Schmerach the Bühler flows.

Apart from the small parts of the forest on the lower reaches, the area is a land-cleared and almost completely cleared landscape of large fields and without any settlement. A little less than half in the southeast belongs to the small town of Vellberg , the rest to the small town of Ilshofen .

Tributaries

Origin of the Finsterbach at about 410  m above sea level. NHN a field west of the K 2668 from Vellberg- Großaltdorf in the south to Ilshofen - Oberaspach in the north. The stream runs westward throughout.

  • (Graben von der Lichse ), from the left and south-east to about 396  m above sea level. NHN at a bend in the field, less than 0.4 km and approx. 0.3 km². Arises at about 405  m above sea level. NHN at the junction from the path north past the Gewann Lichse and separates the Gewanne Unterer Finsterbach on the left and Greut on the right.
  • (Bach vom Romigsbrunnens ), from the right and northeast to about 395  m above sea level. NHN from the Gewann Stöckenwiesen , over 0.1 km and under 0.1 km². The source of Romigsbrunnen is about 400  m above sea level. NHN on a small hedge.

Mouth of the Finsterbach from the left and east to about 303  m above sea level. NHN between the causeway over this and the barbecue meadow in the lower Schmerach . The stream is approx. 2.2 km long and has a catchment area of approx. 2.1 km².

geology

In the subsurface of the catchment area there is the Upper Muschelkalk everywhere , into which the stream only cuts at the beginning of its forest section on the lower reaches and into which it also flows. Above this, however, lie almost otherwise younger geological layers, predominantly the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt formation ) of the Unterkeuper . This is also where the two tributaries mentioned above arise. Above that there are some islands of Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ) at the edge of the valley basin . Loess sediment from Quaternary deposits is located at the greatest heights , and this is where the Finsterbach rift begins. This has deposited a cone of rubble in the mouth area. From the Eulenberg to the right of the lower valley blade, a floe has slipped towards the mouth.

Protected area

The forest section on the Unterlauf lies in the nature reserve Bühlertal between Vellberg and Geislingen with side valleys and adjacent areas .
