Fiorentino is a municipality ( Comune in Italian , Castello in San Marino ) in the Republic of San Marino .

geography

Fiorentino has 2,531 inhabitants and an area of 6.56 km². The municipality is located in the south of the republic on the Rio San Marino (also called Torrente San Marino ), which forms the border with Chiesanuova and later flows into the Marecchia .

The place borders on the San Marinese communities Chiesanuova , San Marino , Borgo Maggiore , Faetano and Montegiardino as well as on the Italian communities Monte Grimano and Sassofeltrio (both in the province of Pesaro and Urbino ).

Fiorentino to the districts include (Italian Frazione , san-marinesisch Curazie ) Capanne (450 m slm ), Crociale and Pianacci (both also 450 m).

The name Fiorentino is due to the lush vegetation in the municipality (from the Italian fiorente = to thrive , which is also in the name of the city of Florence ).

history

The area of Fiorentino was already settled in pre-Roman and Roman times, which is testified by the discovery of tombs from the time of the Roman Republic in the east of the municipality in 1910 . A vase, pottery shards and two small statues were found that are now kept in the Museo di Stato in San Marino.

Until 1371 the place belonged to the Counts of Carpegna ( Province of Pesaro and Urbino ), then it passed to the Malatesta of Rimini . In 1463 he was conquered and annexed by San Marino. In 1479, the Castellaccio castle on Monte Seghizzo, only three kilometers from Terza Torre San Marinos, was destroyed by the San Marines themselves in order to prevent them from threatening San Marino in the event of a reconquest by the Malatesta. The defense tower Torricella on Monte San Cristoforo was also torn down by San Marino in 1465. The third castle in the municipality, the Castello di Pennarossa on Monte Moganzio , was probably already in disrepair at the time of the conquest by San Marino in 1463.

Sports

Fiorentino is represented by the teams FC Fiorentino and SP Tre Fiori in the Liga Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio .
