Fischer Film Almanac

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fischer Film Almanach was a book series, the annual editions of which contained brief reviews of newly featured films and supplementary information on the world of film, and was published from 1980 to 1999. Each entry in a film contained an outline of the plot and a rating.

The publisher's declared aim was to depict the entirety of the film works that are feature-length films and that were first shown in cinemas in the Federal Republic of Germany, appeared on video or were broadcast on television. They further delimited the field under observation, for example by only considering video publications of television films in exceptional cases, in the case of significant contributors. The almanac also provided information on numerous film festivals , film awards and new film books.

The first half of the 1980s was marked by an expansion of the video market and expansion of the corresponding entries. In the first volume from 1980 around 270 cinema and 70 television films were discussed. Twenty years later, the last edition comprised around 1,100 film titles, around 300 of which were new releases in the cinema and on video and around 500 were first broadcast on television. The circulation of the individual years fell from 22,000 to 6,000. Electronic competing products were blamed for the decline, in addition to countless offers on the Internet, as well as the film service published on CD-ROM . The publisher decided in 1999 to discontinue the series because it saw no economic future for it, not even in electronic formats. In his obituary, the film critic Hanns-Georg Rodek described the Fischer Film Almanach , which had offered serious assessments, as a "down-to-earth" alternative to the Heyne film yearbook .

The 1999 edition contains a complete index of all film titles from all twenty editions.
