history
Existed as a community
Fives emerged from the French Revolution in 1793 as an independent municipality that belonged to the canton of Lannoy . At that time, the place had less than 700 inhabitants and thus had village-like structures. However, it experienced rapid growth, had almost 1,000 residents in 1800 and was assigned to the canton of Lille-Nord-Est (Lille-Nord-Ost) in 1801 , thus establishing the administrative link to the city. At around the same time, industrialization began, which reached the place with the establishment of the sugar manufacturer Cail in 1812. Fives had around 5000 inhabitants when it was incorporated into Lille in 1858.

Later development
In 1861, a railway company set up shop in the newly created district, which from 1865 was named Fives-Lille . This merged in 1958 with the older company Cail ; Several name changes followed later, as well as a temporary affiliation to the listed BNP Paribas , which ended in 2001. Despite the survival of the large company, deindustrialization resulted in a corresponding structural weakness, which was expressed in 2008 in an unemployment rate of 22 percent; In addition, the average income was well below the national average and the average age was very low at 34 years.
Sports
With the SC Fives founded in 1901 , the place owned a club that competed for the French championship at the beginning of the 20th century, albeit without success. The workers' club was included in the newly founded Division 1 in 1932 and was one of the founders of professional football in France. The club remained in the top national league until 1939 regular play was stopped due to the war; In 1944 he merged with the league and local rivals Olympique Lille to form OSC Lille .
