The central feature of the flag was the winged lion of San Marco with an open book.

The meaning of the book was: Peace be upon you, Marcus, my evangelist. This sentence comes from a medieval legend that says that an angel said this sentence to Marcus when he went to Rome. Some sources say the book on the flag is the Bible . However, since the above sentence is not taken from the Bible, this claim is unlikely.

The meaning and definition of the other elements on the flag are still largely unknown.

The current flag of the city of Venice and the Italian region of Veneto is based on the historical flag .
