Flavio Testi (born January 4, 1923 in Florence , † January 14, 2014 ) was an Italian composer and musicologist .

Life

After private music lessons and lessons at the Turin Conservatory , he went to Milan , where he continued his musical education as an autodidact. He also earned a degree in literature in 1951. He became a freelance composer and arranged sheet music editions for well-known music publishers. He also taught at the Conservatories of Padua , Milan and Florence.

The vocal work Crocifissione (Crucifixion) for male choir, strings, brass, timpani and three pianos was premiered in 1954 as part of the symphony concerts at La Scala in Milan. Their great success immediately opened the doors to other Italian theaters and concert halls for him.

His symphonic works have been regularly recorded, from the Stabat Mater to New York. Oficina y denuncia (after García Lorca), from the Canto a las madres de los milicianos muertos (after Pablo Neruda ) to the Cori di Santiago , from the four cantatas for chamber ensemble to Cielo for solo flute, from the works for choir a cappella for the Jubilee for Solo clarinet.

He also wrote four volumes of a history of Italian music and a book on musical Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. He also translated works a. a. by Hans Werner Henze , Dmitrij Schostakowitsch , Francis Poulenc and Sergej Prokofjew into Italian and was temporarily artistic director of the Teatro Comunale in Florence.

His first opera Il furore di Oreste ( Orestes Anger), opera in one act based on Aeschylus (Teatro Donizetti, Bergamo, 1956) was followed by others in prominent locations:
