The Holzdorf Air Base ( ICAO code : ETSH , also Schönewalde / Holzdorf Air Base ) is a military airfield of the Air Force . It is located on the Saxony-Anhalt-Brandenburg state border east of Jessen in Saxony-Anhalt and north of Herzberg in Brandenburg . The greater part of the square is located in Schönewalde (Brandenburg) and borders in the north on federal highway 187 . The square was named after the Holzdorf district of Jessen .

Aerodrome infrastructure

In addition to the 2419 m long asphalt runway 09/27, which was only used today and was extended from originally 2350 m after 1990, there was a parallel grass runway 09/27 to the north with a length of 1800 m and a width of 40 m. In addition, there is a taxiway on the northern edge of the airfield , which, measuring 2400 m × 15 m, can also be used as an emergency runway.

South of the runway is the tower , north of it the aprons , hangars and a helipad .

A Precision Approach Path Indicator serves as an approach aid for runways 09 and 27  .

Instrument approaches

A TACAN system, an NDB and an ILS Cat I for runway 27 are available as navigation aids for instrument approaches .

history

Beginnings in the time of the NVA

MiG-21MF of the JG-1 in Holzdorf (1990)

In 1968 the NVA selected the site as the location for a new field airfield. The field airfield was completed in 1974, and was expanded into an operational airfield by 1980. The handover to the Jagdfliegergeschwader 1 took place in early November 1982, which was moved from the old Cottbus location to Holzdorf. It was the most modern airfield of its time in the GDR and had three developed decentralization areas . All in all, the Fighter Wing 1, the Aviation Technical Battalion 1, the Intelligence Air Traffic Control Battalion 1 and the Radio Technical Battalion 41 were stationed here in the 1980s. Construction work on the site lasted until 1984.

After reunification

With the reunification , the Bundeswehr took over the area and disbanded the Fighter Fliegergeschwader 1 and the Aviation Technical Battalion 1 with the exception of a subordinate command . On April 1, 1991, an air transport group of Lufttransportgeschwader 62 took up its work as the successor to Fighter Wing 1, followed by Air Force Training Regiment 1 on October 1, 1991. Also on April 1, 1991, the radio engineering battalion 41 was disbanded and transferred to the newly established radar command department 34 . On September 30, 1994 it was transferred to Radar Guidance Department 25.

Modernization and NATO Integration

Radar Command Department 25 was officially subordinated to NATO on January 9, 1995 .

The air defense command post, which was built from 1978 to 1983, was completely gutted in 1997 and 1998 and then rebuilt for 40 million DM. Then, from April 2000, state-of-the-art computer technology worth 50 million DM was installed and, with GIADS, the most modern Air Command and Control System (ACCS) in Europe was officially put into operation on June 6, 2000. On October 1, 2002, operational control area 3 was reorganized as the successor to radar control department 25. On May 19, 2003, the newly established Army Aviation Support Squadron 1 was relocated from Cottbus to Holzdorf.

By 2012 the infrastructure for flight operations of the NH-90 helicopters had been created, for which up to approx. 300 million euros were invested. With the introduction of this new weapon system, the helicopter squadrons of the air transport squadron 61 and air transport squadron 63 were to be combined in the helicopter squadron 64 at the Holzdorf site after the helicopter component of the air transport squadron 62 .

With the realignment of the Bundeswehr and the associated transfer of skills between the air force and the army, the training flight operations of the CH-53 have been ensured from Holzdorf since 2014. The first CH-53GA arrived at the end of September 2013. Training flight operations began in January 2014.

On June 24, 2015, an Antonov An-124 landed at the air base for the first time . With the landing, the air base proved that it is possible to move military equipment with large transport aircraft from Holzdorf.

Others

The air base is located in two federal states, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg . The state border runs directly over the runway. This is due to historical reasons, as the Cottbus district , in which the air base was located, was divided up between the two newly founded countries after reunification. The federal states do not see the need to conclude a state treaty with an exchange of territory.
