Florian Freund (* 1953 in Vöcklabruck ) is an Austrian historian .

education and profession

Freund attended elementary school between 1960 and 1964 and then grammar school between 1964 and 1972. Between 1972 and 1987 he studied history at the universities of Salzburg , Graz and Vienna . Since 1981 he has worked on research projects at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna and in 1987 he was taught by Erika Weinzierl on “The history of the Ebensee concentration camp. Missile Armament and Forced Labor ”to the Dr. phil. PhD. Between 1987 and 1999 he was a research assistant at the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance . He worked further in 1997 as a Research Fellow at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC and has been a member of the editorial board of the journal zeitgeschichte and the Society for Contemporary History. From 1999 to 2002 Freund was also a member of the Austrian Commission of Historians and, in the summer semester, visiting professor at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj , Romania. His main research interests are in the areas of war economics , forced labor , concentration camps , the Holocaust and politics of persecution against "gypsies".
