The flight image is the appearance of a bird in flight when viewed from below .

Especially with larger bird species, the proportions of swing and thrust , length and posture of the neck become clear in the flight image , for example:

  • Buzzards : long, broad wings, short thrust;
  • Hawks : short, wide wings, long thrust;
  • Hawks : long, narrow, pointed wings, short thrust;
  • Storks , cranes : neck elongated;
  • Heron : neck curved in an S-shape.

Another feature is the type of flight such as gliding (buzzards, eagle ), Shake (Falcon), Gaukelflug ( consecrations ), tearing, fast flight ( duck ) or slower swing beat ( geese , herons).

Many bird species can be identified or addressed based on their characteristic flight pattern .
