Kharkiv International Airport ( Ukrainian Міжнародний аеропорт “Харків” ; IATA code: HRK, ICAO code: UKHH) is one of the most important commercial airports in Ukraine . It is located in eastern Ukraine twelve kilometers south of the city center of Kharkiv , the country's second largest city, in the Sloboda district . After the renovation, its capacity will be more than 1,600 passengers per hour between 2008 and 2011. The planned passenger volume is 800,000 people annually, with a maximum capacity of the airport of two million passengers per year.
history
The construction of the old terminal in the style of Socialist Classicism began in 1951. The opening took place together with the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the unification of Ukraine and Russia in 1954. In 1958, a trolleybus line was built from the airport to the city center.
In preparation for the 2012 European Football Championship , which Kharkiv hosted, the airport was completely renovated and a new terminal was built so that aircraft the size of an Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 can now take off and land.
Airlines and Destinations
Six airlines at Kharkiv Airport currently offer regular flight connections to eight other airports in a total of seven countries, including Ukraine.
Note: Destinations and providers can change quickly. The status is given in February 2017.
Passenger numbers
The number of passengers has increased tenfold over the past decade. There was a slump in the number of passengers in 2009. In 2011, however, the number of passengers in 2008 was almost reached again. The high passenger numbers in 2012 can be explained by the European Football Championship 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
