Airlines and Destinations

history
Thanks to its good location, the airport should promote tourist development for the south-west of the country. However, it was hardly used from the start; a few years after its opening, the radar and other equipment were dismantled.
In 2006 negotiations were held with a Spanish company to convert it into a service terminal.
The already neglected airport was additionally damaged by Storm Noel in 2007 . After that, only small planes and helicopters could take off and land due to damage to the runway. The reopening for regular flight operations took place in August 2009. At the same time, the government issued a one-year tax exemption for passengers and airlines for the airport in the hope of increasing use.
After the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, this airport, around 100 kilometers east of the border with Haiti and thanks to its long runway, would have been ideal for aid deliveries with wide-body aircraft, but its condition did not allow use. The repair work was tackled immediately and around the clock with considerable machine and personnel expenditure. The airport was able to be used as a hub for aid deliveries from January 16, during which the work continued at night so as not to hinder flight operations. On January 20, the repair was so far completed that cargo aircraft of the type C-130 Hercules could land.
Trivia
The German avant-garde band FSK released the title “Aeropuerto Internacional Maria Montez” on their album “Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle” from 2008, although the content does not deal with the airport.
