The Salamanca-Matacán Airport ( Spanish Aeropuerto de Salamanca , IATA code : SLM , ICAO : LESA ) is an international airport in the province of Salamanca in Spain . The airport is located about 14 kilometers east of the city of Salamanca on the site of the former Matacán fortress. The Spanish air forces use the place as Base Aérea de Matacán .
history
The current airport location is the third after San Fernando and Arauzo, both of which have been abandoned today. During the first year of the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and the end of March, they also served as a base for the Junkers Ju 52 / 3m of Kampfgruppe 88 (K / 88) of the German Condor Legion , before they were moved to Burgos .
After the outbreak of the Battle of Brunete was in the north lying Battle Group 88 , which is now the modern Heinkel He 111 began, moved in July 1937 on the new base at the present site Matacán. In the middle of the war, the first Iberia flight to Tetuán in what was then the Spanish part of Morocco started from here in the summer of 1937 . To resume flight operations, Iberia received Ju 52 / 3m from Lufthansa . In May 1939, Iberia relocated to Madrid-Barajas Airport, which still serves as its home base today .
After the war, the Spanish Air Force stationed a Ju 52 / 3m equipped blind flight school in Matacán, the Escuela de Vuelo sin Visibilidad, from which the Escuela Superior de Vuelo , which existed until the beginning of the 1950s and trained the elite of the Spanish air forces, emerged in 1946 . This school was relocated to Jerez and in 1954 Salamanca became its home base for the flight school for advanced training in instrument flight. Starting in 1964, it also carried out training courses in propulsion and engine technology, before this branch of training was transferred to the civilian Escuela Nacional de Aeronáutica (ENA) ten years later .
The civil joint use began in 1946 and in 1954 the runway 04/22 was opened. The ENA mentioned in the previous paragraph was created in 1974 and a new terminal was opened in 2005.
