An airport fire service is a plant fire brigade or company fire that at an airport the fire defense sure and burning to incidents or accidents to rescue the plane passengers, aircraft and deleting mountains disabled aircraft is used. In many countries, laws stipulate a very short period of time between alerting and deploying the fire service, so that larger airports usually have their own airport fire service.

Tasks and skills

The following areas of responsibility can be identified for most airport fire departments:

  1. Aircraft fire protection - every airport fulfills aircraft fire protection according to a category of the guidelines of the international civil aviation organization ICAO
  2. Technical assistance - technical assistance includes the binding of leaking equipment (e.g. fuel ), the recovery of an aircraft that has had an accident or the recovery of dangerous goods on board such aircraft
  3. Building fire protection / technical assistance - many airport fire brigades also include defensive fire protection at the terminals and other airport buildings in their portfolio
  4. Ambulance service - an ambulance service is provided for medical emergencies and first aid , as an actual plane crash with a passenger aircraft often triggers a mass casualty that can only be dealt with by a large number of rescue workers

In addition, some airport fire departments have their own training center, where new personnel can be trained in the tasks that differ from professional fire departments at an airport.

In order to comply with the ICAO requirement that every possible accident site on the airport site must be reached within three minutes, international airports such as Frankfurt am Main or Munich have several fire stations distributed over the entire airport area.

Vehicles and equipment

A large airfield fire-fighting vehicle has an engine output of up to 800  kW and, despite its large overall weight, often reaches a speed of 120  km / h in 40  s . Compared to a normal fire truck , it has a significantly larger water tank (up to 12,000  l ) and a lot of foam compound , as it is not possible to set up a feed line to the water supply during use. The fire extinguisher pump usually has an output of around 6,000 l / min and requires its own motor for this. Airfield fire engines usually have a crew of one to three people.

One of the world's largest manufacturers of airfield fire fighting vehicles is the Austrian company Rosenbauer .

In addition to the airfield fire-fighting vehicles , there are other normal fire-fighting vehicles such as turntable ladders , emergency fire-fighting group vehicles or command vehicles , the equipment of which has been adapted to the requirements.

But there are also deviations from the usual fire brigades in personal equipment due to increased risks. For example, the fire brigade at Vienna-Schwechat airport has introduced uniforms in pale golden natural fibers that can withstand temperatures of up to 1,000 ° C. The uniforms in the traditional designs and colors are too absorbent to withstand these high temperatures.

Most airport fire brigades in Germany are organized as plant fire brigades and are run that way. Some airport fire departments are exclusively responsible for aircraft fire protection and not for building fire protection according to their mandate and status, but most airport fire departments usually provide aircraft fire protection, building fire protection and rescue services in equal measure. In addition to the airport fire brigades as plant fire brigades, more and more airport fire brigades have recently joined the municipal fire brigade, usually a professional fire brigade , and are also managed by it.

This type of airport fire brigade is run as a "normal" fire station and is staffed by professional fire brigade personnel, so they are officials of the fire service. As a rule, these officials are also supported by operating staff who can be organized as volunteer fire brigades . The integration of these forces is exactly the same as with the plant fire brigades. There are agreements between the city and the airport on the financing of the vehicles, the airport fire brigade and the payment of personnel costs. The city relieves the airport of some tasks and problems. Examples of an airport fire brigade at the city fire brigade can be found in Dortmund at the Dortmund fire brigade or at the Braunschweig fire brigade . The fire brigades also take on the training of professional fire fighters and volunteer fire fighters.

Since fire operations for airport fire departments are not that frequent, the airport fire department has the opportunity to gather practical experience at another fire department of the professional fire department at regular intervals.
