A flight instructor is an experienced pilot who has the certificate of competence ( instructor license) to train prospective pilots ( student pilots ) on the ground and in the air while flying. Since 2011, Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 of the Commission of November 3, 2011 regulates the establishment of technical regulations and administrative procedures with regard to aircrew in civil aviation in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 216/2008 of the European Parliament and the Council the necessary training and qualifications uniformly within Europe.

Restrictions are that the FI (RP) is not allowed to approve student pilots for free flying, i.e. the first solo flight, not to approve student pilots for cross-country flights and not to accept any check flights to obtain the class rating .
  • For the flight instructor PPL / A, the CPL theory test must also be taken at the LBA.

Gliding Instructor FI (S)

In order to become a flight instructor for gliders , in Germany currently, according to Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 , the following requirements must be met:

Authorized instruction (CRI / TRI)

The training for teaching authorization for class or type ratings (CRI / TRI) is shorter, as those authorized to instruct only train students who already have a valid ticket. To qualify for instruction, you must have 300 hours of flight experience as a pilot on an aircraft, including at least 30 hours of flight experience as a pilot on aircraft of the relevant aircraft class or type. The training includes a theoretical course and flight instruction at a flight school (ATO) recognized in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 216/2008 as well as a practical test. The instruction authorization is valid for 3 years and, like the FI (A) teaching authorization, can be extended.

  • Class rating instructors (CRI ) teach or extend class or type ratings such as B. SEP (for technically not complicated single-engine, non-high-performance aircraft) or TMG ( touring motor glider ). You can continue to do training flights to familiarize yourself with or familiarize yourself with different aircraft within a class. This also includes differential training in accordance with FCL.710 within the SEP / TMG classes for aircraft with controllable pitch propellers, retractable landing gear, turbochargers, pressurized cabins or tailwheels.

After a corresponding further examination, CRI can also train for the towing or aerobatic authorization, provided that they themselves have these authorizations.

  • Type rating instructors (TRI ) teach or extend type ratings for aircraft types that require their own type rating .

Others

Similar requirements apply to flight instructors for balloons ("FI (B)") and helicopters ("FI (H)").

Further teaching authorizations according to Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 :
