A BAC 1-11 aircraft accident occurred on June 26, 1991 on a domestic flight of the Nigerian airline Okada Air from Lagos to Kano . In the incident, a BAC 1-11-402AP (5N-AOW) landed in a field due to lack of fuel, killing four people.

machine

The aircraft involved in the accident was a BAC 1-11-402AP, from British production, with the serial number 094, which had made its first flight on January 3, 1967 with the test registration G-AVEJ and was then delivered to Philippine Airlines , where it was in service with the aircraft registration PI-C1141 . On March 12, 1973, the aircraft was transferred to the Quebecair fleet , where it was given the license plate CF-QBR , which was later changed to C-FQBR . In May 1985 the machine was taken out of service and the registration was canceled on December 30, 1985. The machine then went to the Nigerian Okada Air, which operated a large fleet of BAC 1-11 aircraft. The twin- engine, medium - range narrow-body aircraft with the factory number 070 was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Spey 511-14 engines. At the time of the accident, the machine had completed 35,860 operating hours in 39,057 take-offs and landings.

Occupants and flight history

The plane took off from Murtala Mohammad Airport in Lagos at 19:05 local time on a scheduled domestic flight to Kano Airport . 48 passengers had taken the flight. In addition, there was a five-person crew on board, which consisted of a flight captain, a first officer and two flight attendants.

the accident

Due to a bad weather front, it was not possible to take a direct flight to Kano. After almost two hours in the air, the crew was unable to get on a route to Kano. The pilots then found that the machine was near Sokoto , a town 380 kilometers west of Kano. Due to the bad weather front, they were unable to continue the flight to Kano. When they reached Sokoto Airport around 9:00 p.m. , it was closed and the lights turned off. The airport was only operated in daylight and closed when it was dark.

Due to a lack of kerosene, the pilots finally had to make an emergency landing in a field six kilometers from Sokoto Airport. During the emergency landing, the landing gear was torn off and the machine broke apart. Four passengers were killed.
