The RBD same (same FGE) is a part of the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive defined river basin which the catchment area of the internal same and the outer same together umliegendem coastal waters comprising. Among other things, this includes the entire catchment area of ​​the Kiel Canal .

Austria

In Austria, the Elbe region only includes small areas in Lower Austria that drain over the Vltava into the Czech Republic. The area extends in the northwestern Waldviertel near Gmünd and Litschau , over 55 km from the border with the Mühlviertel to the northern tip of Austria near Haugschlag . It forms (abbreviation: ELB) one of the 8 national river basin districts (planning areas) of the National Water  Management Plan (NPG).
