The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) is the association for football clubs and national teams in Iran . It was founded in 1920. In 1958 the association joined the Asian Football Confederation . The association has been a member of FIFA since 1945 . The association was suspended by FIFA on November 22, 2006. The reason for this was the involvement of politics in association matters. On December 17, 2006 the ban was lifted by the world association.

Iranian championship

Main article: Iranian Pro League

The men's soccer championship in Iran is the most important national title. National championships have been held in Iran since 1973. First they took place from 1973 to 1978 under the name Takht Jamshid Cup . Due to the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the First Gulf War , there was no championship between 1979 and 1989. Since 1991 there has been a regular league competition again. From 1991 to 2001 it was the Azadegan League , before today's Iran Pro League was introduced as a professional league in the 2001/02 season . The first title holder of the professional league was Esteghlal Tehran . There are a total of four senior leagues for men in Iran.

Hazfi Cup

The Hafzi Cup is the national cup competition of Iran. It is organized annually by the FFIRI. Since the winner of the cup qualified for the AFC Champions League , it has been the most important title in national club football after the championship. The winner of the competition will be determined according to the knockout system . The current winner is Esteghlal Tehran .

Super cup

Main article: Iranian soccer super cup

The Super Cup is determined every year in a game between the champion of the Iran Pro League and the winner of the Hafzi Cup. The Super Cup was held for the first time in 2005.

Futsal League

Since 1998/99, the Association of Iran has also held a futsal league called the Futsal Super League . We held the championship with a total of 12 teams. The first champion of this league was PIMAN . The reigning master is Foulad Mahan

International competitions

Success at soccer world championships

The Iranian men's team has participated in four world championships so far: 1978 , 1998 , 2006 and 2014 . The first round was never made.

Successes at the Olympic Games

The Iranian men's team has so far participated in three Olympic Games. 1964 , 1972 and 1976 . The best result was reaching the quarter-finals in Canada in 1976 .
