The film was produced as part of the Crime Does Not Pay series. The series portrayed various crimes or offenses, their investigation and the subsequent punishment of the perpetrators. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced around 50 episodes between 1935 and 1947. The production of the series was a consequence of the massive criticism of various groups of the violence and crime glorifying Hollywood films of the 1920s and 1930s.
