The 2004 Formula 1 World Championship was the 55th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 18 races from March 7th to October 24th.

For the 7th time, for the 5th time in a row and for the last time, Michael Schumacher became world champion, making him the most successful Formula 1 driver in racing history. The Ferrari team won the world championship title for the 14th time and 6th time in a row.

In many of the races driven this season, the winner achieved the fastest average racing speed that is still valid today, either for the respective track configuration or even across all track configurations. The fastest speed ever recorded in a Formula 1 race and the individual lap with the highest average speed come from the 2004 race in Monza . In the following years, successive changes to the regulations to reduce costs and to make the competition more exciting for the spectators led to the fact that the best times from this fastest Formula 1 season on many tracks are maintained despite technical progress.

Changes in 2004

Racetracks

In the 2004 season, 18 grands prix were held. For the first time took place on April 4, Bahrain Grand Prix held, the Chinese Grand Prix was also held on 26 September for the first time. The Belgian Grand Prix returned to the calendar after a year off. The Austrian Grand Prix , which only became part of the Formula 1 World Championship again in 2014, was no longer held .

The season finale took place in Brazil in 2004. The Brazilian Grand Prix was previously usually held early in the season.

Technical regulations

In order to reduce costs, the rule was introduced that every engine should last an entire race weekend. If an engine has to be replaced during the weekend, the driver will be penalized with a decrease in the starting position by ten places.

Electronic driving aids have been restricted. The launch control and the fully automatic control of the transmission were prohibited. The traction control remained, but was only allowed to intervene from a speed of 100 km / h.

During the season, the Front Torque Transfer System , which BAR used and was first used by Benetton in 1999 , was banned by the FIA despite temporary legality.

Sporting regulations

Qualifying was completely scheduled for Saturday and divided into two sessions in which the driver is only allowed to drive one fast lap. In the first session the drivers start in the order in which they crossed the finish line in the previous race (in the first race the order was chosen according to the 2003 World Championship final result). It is used to determine the order for the second session, which is then about the starting positions for the race. The second session was right after the first. The pilots drove in reverse order to the first qualifying segment.

From the 2004 season onwards, the teams were allowed to use a third driver for Friday training. The teams that finished 1st to 4th in the constructors' championship in the previous season are excluded from this rule.

The speed limit in the pit lane has been increased from 80 km / h to 100 km / h. In individual cases, however, this was not done for security reasons.

driver

The 2004 season began with some changes in the team's driver line-up. The teams Minardi , Jordan and Sauber changed all drivers.

Nick Heidfeld and Giancarlo Fisichella changed places with Heidfeld going to Jordan and Fisichella to Sauber. The second new driver at Sauber was Felipe Massa, who returned to Sauber after a year as a test driver at Ferrari. Massa already competed in the 2002 season for the Sauber team. Jordan was the second driver to field third-placed Giorgio Pantano from the previous Formula 3000 season .

Takuma Satō replaced Jacques Villeneuve at BAR-Honda before the end of the 2003 Formula 1 season because the Canadian was too expensive to manage the team. Villeneuve left Formula 1 for a few months until he was reactivated by Renault for two races in the current 2004 season for the prematurely and surprisingly fired Jarno Trulli , without making any particular impression. Jarno Trulli left Renault after the Italian Grand Prix , but was able to return to the World Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix , this time for Toyota Racing .

Also Heinz-Harald Frentzen had left the Formula 1 because it could not find a more compact team. At Jaguar, Christian Klien replaced last year's driver Justin Wilson . Minardi started with Gianmaria Bruni and Zsolt Baumgartner as new drivers.

Other changes were made during the season.

The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne ( Australia ) took place on March 7, 2004 and ran over 58 laps (307.574 km).

Contrary to the expectations of the competition, who had expected tire problems at Bridgestone after the winter break, Michael Schumacher already achieved good lap times in practice after a few laps, which made the poor performance of Ferrari before the season forgotten.

Schumacher reached pole position ahead of Barrichello and Montoya and drove the fastest race lap with 1: 24.125 minutes. Only Alonso was able to keep up with the two leading Ferrari drivers during the race.

With Massa, Heidfeld, Bruni, Webber, Baumgartner and Räikkönen, six drivers could not finish the race due to technical problems.

The Malaysian Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia took place on March 21, 2004 and ran over 56 laps (310.408 km).

Ferrari was also able to bring the best car to the start in the glowing furnace of Malaysia - the air temperature was 40 degrees on the day of the race. Mark Webber , who surprisingly came second in qualifying in his Michelin-powered Jaguar , only led for a short time, only to retire after a spin on lap 24.

The race was disappointing for McLaren: Coulthard came in sixth place, but Kimi Räikkönen had to retire after the engine failure in Melbourne this time with a gearbox failure. Montoya drove the fastest race lap with 1: 34.223 minutes, while his teammate Ralf Schumacher initially fell back after a collision with Webber and was ultimately eliminated with an engine failure.

Bahrain Grand Prix

The Bahrain Grand Prix in Bahrain took place on April 4, 2004 and ran over 57 laps (308.769 km).

The Ferrari drivers also achieved a double victory in the sheikdom. Overall, however, the deficits of the other teams were not as clear as in the first two races of the season.

McLaren experienced a "black weekend" with a flaming engine failure at Raikkonen's car and a gearbox failure at Coulthard. After only four points in three starts, no one at Mercedes spoke about the world title. Ralf Schumacher lost a better place than 7th in a collision with Satō.

Michael Schumacher, on the other hand, after the pole in front of Barrichello and Montoya and the victory, also managed the fastest race lap with 1: 34.223 minutes.

San Marino Grand Prix

8th Kimi Raikkonen McLaren - Mercedes + 1 lap

The San Marino Grand Prix in Imola took place on April 25, 2004 and ran over 62 laps (305.606 km).

Jenson Button celebrated his first pole in qualifying. Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya were on the starting positions 2 and 3. Already on the first lap there was a wheel-to-wheel duel between the two drivers through two corners, with Montoya trying to overtake in unsuitable places and Schumacher his car so far behind carried outside that the Colombian got off the track. Race director Charlie Whiting , however, saw this as a normal racing duel, so that both opponents remained without warning.

Button only had fuel for ten laps and after his pit stop had to give Michael Schumacher the lead, which he did not give up until the finish. Last year's runner-up, Kimi Raikkonen , scored points for the first time in 2004 after a failed training session and starting from last place with eighth place and one lap behind.

Michael Schumacher set the fastest race lap with 1: 20.411 minutes. Heidfeld, da Matta, Bruni and Pantano dropped out with technical problems.

Spanish Grand Prix

8th Jenson Button BAR Honda + 1 lap

The Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona took place on May 9, 2004 and covered a distance of 66 laps (305.256 km).

The surprise man of the weekend Takuma Satō could not fully implement his steady speed and landed in fifth place, while his teammate Button completed a failed qualifying after a chase to get the last point. After the pole position for Michael Schumacher, Ferrari captured not only the fifth victory in the fifth race but also an undisputed double victory. With 1: 17.450 minutes, Schumacher again set the fastest race lap.

The 10th and 11th place of the two McLaren-Mercedes drivers Coulthard and Räikkönen meant another low point for the ambitious team. Both Williams drivers struggled with braking problems, which caused Montoya to even give up. Further failures were recorded by Pantano, Klien, Panis, Heidfeld, Bruni and Baumgartner.

Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo took place on May 23, 2004 and covered a distance of 77 laps (257.180 km).

In qualifying, Trulli took pole position ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Button.

Already in the 3rd lap of the race Giancarlo Fisichellas Sauber overturned due to an engine failure of Takuma Satōs BAR-Honda and the cloud of smoke that formed . This was followed by the first safety car phase, which was later followed by another after an accident involving Fernando Alonso , who drove into the guardrails while trying to lap Ralf Schumacher in the tunnel passage.

The leading trulli after the start came into the pit lane for an early stop during the first safety car phase. Michael Schumacher then took the lead and set the fastest lap with 1: 14.439.

One lap before the end of the second safety car phase, Juan Pablo Montoya behind the German drove into the rear of the Ferrari and pushed Schumacher into the guardrails. With a broken left front suspension and a torn off front spoiler, Schumacher had to give up the race. This enabled Trulli to celebrate his first Grand Prix victory, while Nick Heidfeld scored his first championship points this year in the defeated Jordan - Ford .

Michael Schumacher took pole position ahead of Satō and Trulli. Schumacher won safely and was again able to achieve the fastest race lap with 1: 29.468 minutes.

At the start, Montoya collided with his team mate Ralf Schumacher, who had to end the race straight away. Da Matta was also involved in the accident and also retired. Montoya also damaged the front spoiler of his car, but was finally able to reach 8th place.

Both McLaren-Mercedes drivers retired in the first half of the race with engine damage. With 13 laps to go, Satō also failed with a defective engine.

The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal took place on June 13, 2004 and went over a distance of 70 laps (305.270 km).

In qualifying, Ralf Schumacher was able to achieve pole position for the first time this season, ahead of Button and Trulli. After the race, Ralf Schumacher was on podium 2 at the award ceremony, but was later disqualified as well as his teammate Montoya and the two Toyota drivers da Matta and Panis due to irregular brake ventilation.

The two Renaults were eliminated for the first time in the 2004 season with technical problems. Massa, Satō, Bruni and Webber also dropped out due to problems with the technology.

Jordan substitute driver Timo Glock crossed the finish line in eleventh and moved up to 7th place due to the disqualifications of the Williams and Toyota and thus scored two championship points.

Barrichello set the fastest race lap with 1: 13.622 minutes just before the end of the race on lap 68.

The US Grand Prix in Indianapolis took place on June 20, 2004 and went over a distance of 73 laps (306.016 km).

Barrichello reached the best starting position ahead of Schumacher and Satō. Barrichello also set the fastest race lap with 1: 10.399 minutes. However, the victory again went to Michael Schumacher.

The race started with a spectacular collision between Klien, Pantano, Massa and Bruni. On the 10th lap, Ralf Schumacher had a serious accident, who had crashed backwards on the start-finish straight at around 300 km / h into the wall of the banked curve. Schumacher could not get out of the destroyed car himself and was taken straight to the hospital.

The second Williams-BMW driver Montoya could not finish the race either. He was disqualified 15 laps before the end of the race because he had switched to the replacement car a few seconds before the start of the warm-up lap because the starting mechanism of his car was not working.

With the seventh double success, Ferrari could have secured the constructors' world championship in this race. However, Barrichello was only 12th after a collision with Coulthard right at the start of the race and because of the subsequent repair of his car.

On lap 14 Raikkonen lost his rear wing and hit a pile of tires. For him, the race ended prematurely after he had previously completed the fastest lap with 1: 13.780 minutes. Heidfeld and da Matta were also unable to finish the race due to technical problems.

Michael Schumacher was able to convert his pole position into a victory again.

Trulli took pole position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Alonso. Raikkonen started from 10th place, but was still able to win the race and also drove the fastest race lap with 1: 45.108 minutes.

The race started with two accidents on the first lap: First, Satō and Webber collided. A short time later, Pantano drove into Bruni's unusual Minardi.

For Michael Schumacher, second place was enough to win the world championship title for the seventh time, as after 14 of 18 races he was already 40 points ahead of Barrichello with 128 points.

The Italian Grand Prix in Monza took place on September 12, 2004 and covered a distance of 53 laps (306.720 km).

Barrichello achieved pole position ahead of Montoya and Michael Schumacher. In the race, the tire choice was crucial due to the initially very wet conditions. Barrichello started with rain tires and coped much better with the wet road than the competitors who started on dry tires. Michael Schumacher spun and fell back to 15th place. Panis lost his front wing in close traffic and had to give up.

Four laps later, the track was significantly drier and now the advantages were on the side of the drivers with dry tires, so Barrichello had to make the first pit stop very early, but was ultimately able to win the race.

Barrichello drove the fastest race lap with 1: 21.046 minutes.

The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai took place on September 26, 2004 and covered a distance of 56 laps (305.256 km).

The race sealed the Brazilian’s second place in the championship with Barrichello’s victory , who persistently fought against Raikkonen's attacks . Michael Schumacher's race to catch up at the start from the pit lane, which had meanwhile taken him to 10th place, literally came to nothing when he lost ten seconds after a collision with Jaguar driver Christian Klien shortly afterwards after a ride off the piste and got stuck behind the slower Jacques Villeneuve after his pit stop . After he finally turned into the pit lane, Schumacher caught up to the top again until a puncture threw him hopelessly backwards. So he had to be content with 12th place and the fastest race lap. Raikkonen, who was supposed to get past Barrichello with a short intermediate stint, was stopped at the end by Button , who was able to keep him in check with a two-stop strategy until the end of the race.

The Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka took place on October 10, 2004 and covered a distance of 53 laps (307.573 km).

In qualifying, Michael Schumacher took pole position ahead of his brother Ralf . The two of them were able to convert these starting positions into places one and two in the race.

Barrichello and Montoya had a bad starting position with starting positions 15 and 13 respectively, but worked their way forward continuously during the race. Montoya finally reached seventh place, Barrichello was also able to improve forward, but collided with Coulthard in the 38th lap. As a result, both had to end the race with a broken suspension. Shortly before that, Barrichello had completed the fastest race lap with 1: 32.730 minutes.

The Brazilian Grand Prix in São Paulo took place on October 24, 2004 and covered a distance of 71 laps (305.909 km).

Montoya achieved his first win of the season in his last race for Williams-BMW and set the fastest race lap with 1: 11.473 minutes. In qualifying, Barrichello had reached pole position ahead of Montoya and Raikkonen. In the race, Barrichello fell back to 3rd place.

After a penalty transfer of ten places due to an unauthorized engine change that became necessary after a serious training accident, Michael Schumacher reached 18th place on the grid and finally placed 7th. Despite the resulting low number of points in the last race of the season, Schumacher closed the season in the driver standings with 148 points with a new record number.
