The Tharandt Forest Botanical Garden is an institution of the Technical University of Dresden and at the same time the Saxon state arboretum . It houses individual trees and has been greatly expanded to include North American forest formations since 1997 . A special feature is the close integration with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Technical University of Dresden. It is led by Andreas Roloff and the curator Ulrich Pietzarka. A support association contributes to the financing.

Different concepts

In 1990 the forest botanical garden shows species and subspecies of woody plants on 34 hectares of foothills ; Only 240 species are native to Central Europe . In the historical eastern part, mainly traditional single trunk collections are shown, in the new western part prototypical forest formations that make the structures and dynamics of naturally grown forests recognizable.

The forest botanical garden was set up for academic research and teaching and testing, as well as for the culture and documentation of plant collections. The value for popular education was recognized early on and incorporated into the concept. Recently the goal of safeguarding biological diversity has been added.

Eastern part

The eastern historical part covers 18 hectares on the steep spur of the Tharandter Kienberg . The two-aisled fully automatically air-conditioned greenhouse is also located there. The greenhouse contains a 60 square meter cold house and a 160 square meter warm house. The warm house guarantees a temperature of at least 20 ° C at night and a humidity of 80%. The cold house and warm house are open to visitors. There is also a preparation and technical room and the cultivation department.

Western part

The western part shows 42 North American forest formations as a forest and landscape park of 15.4 hectares on a flat rounded knoll, including:

The natural dynamics of forests can be seen particularly well in the species-rich mixed stands of the North American forests, as competition is particularly intense here. Due to their age, the trees are not yet fully grown, the bushes, shrubs and the herbaceous layer are largely fully developed.

Zeisiggrund Bridge

The eastern historical part and the western North American part are separated by the Zeisiggrund , through which the state road leads from Dresden via Freital and Tharandt to Freiberg . The valley overcomes the 117 meter long Zeisiggrund bridge, a filigree construction made of wood and stainless steel, was completed in November 2003 and cost € 645,000. In 2006 it received the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture .Erioll world.svg

history

In 1811 Johann Adam Reum (1780–1839) and Heinrich Cotta founded the Forest Botanical Garden. Reum was a teacher of botany, mathematics, drawing and surveying at Heinrich Cotta's private forestry school , from which the Tharandt Forestry University developed. In 1875, garden inspector Gustav Büttner worked out the plan for the systematic-botanical quarters that is still valid today. The first greenhouse in the Forest Botanical Garden was built in 1880. In 1905 the laying out of the geographical quarters began. The second greenhouse was built in 1951.

In 1978 PA Schmid introduced the detailed recording of the origin data of the plants.

Instead of the original greenhouses, a fully automated greenhouse was built in 1996. In 2001 the Forest Botanical Garden was dedicated to the Saxon State Arboretum. In the same year, the North American forest formations began to be created.
