The Forest Research and Research Institute Baden-Württemberg (FVA), headquartered in Freiburg, is a departmental research institute of the State Forest Administration (LFV) assigned to the Ministry for Rural Areas and Consumer Protection (MLR) in Stuttgart .

tasks

The research institute has the legal task of “showing the forestry and timber industry rational options for fulfilling the various functions of the forest and examining the ecological relationships between the forest and the environment”. These investigations concern all forest areas and forest functions in the state of Baden-Württemberg : wood production, the various protective functions of the forest and its importance as a recreational area for people.

A characteristic of the forestry experimental system is the long-term, regular recording of essential processes in the forest ecosystems such as B. Tree growth, soil development and changes in the flora and fauna.

The Research Institute accomplishes these objectives through practical research, development , operation of monitoring systems , consulting and education and training . Knowledge transfer takes on a special position in order to successfully transfer the new findings into practice. The institute operates the Liliental forest test site and is responsible for wolf monitoring in Baden-Württemberg.

history

Main building of the FVA in Wonnhaldestr. 4, 79100 Freiburg

The research institute emerged from the Baden Forest Research Institute (Karlsruhe) founded in 1870 and the Württemberg Forest Research Institute founded in 1872 (Stuttgart-Hohenheim). It has existed in its current form since 1958 in Freiburg im Breisgau . Since 1986 the departments of the FVA, which were formerly spread over different locations, have been united in a newly constructed main building on Wonnhaldestrasse.

Cooperations

There is a close collaboration based on the division of labor with the Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg within the framework of the so-called “Freiburg Model”. This cooperation is expressed, among other things, in joint colloquia, a joint series of publications and the implementation of joint research projects. Employees of the research institute also regularly participate in university teaching at the Freiburg Forestry Faculty.

The research institute is closely networked in the national and international research landscape. In April 2009 a regional office of the European Forest Institute (EFI) was set up at the FVA . In addition, the FVA is co-editor of the international website waldwissen.net , which serves the transfer of forest knowledge.
