The fort after the renovation

The Forte de Baguia is a Portuguese fort in the East Timorese town of Baguia ( Suco Alawa Craik , Baucau municipality ).

The fort consists of an inner wall that encloses a rectangle in which there are three buildings. There are two round towers at two corners of the wall . There is a second defensive ring around the inner wall, which uses the hillside location as further protection. A bridge leads over the ditch at the front. The offshore area is fenced again.

history

The fort was built in 1912.

During the Viqueque Rebellion in early June 1959, insurgents tried to take the fort. However, the less than a hundred rebels were repulsed by professional soldiers from the primeira linha , who also had machine guns.

The fort was renovated in 2014 after it was badly derelict. Today there is a hostel in the fort.
