Fortune Global 500

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fortune Global 500 is an annual list of the 500 top-selling companies in the world. It is published by the US business magazine Fortune . The companies listed there are almost exclusively listed.

overview

The first Fortune Global 500 appeared on July 30, 1990 with the information for the business year 1989. Until 1989, the list under the name "International 500" only included non-American industrial companies. US companies joined in in 1990 to create a truly global list of the top-selling industrial companies. The list has had its current form since 1995 and also includes banks, insurance companies and financial service providers according to their turnover.

According to Fortune's definitions and statements , unlisted companies are only included in the Fortune Global 500 list if they publish a so-called Form 10-K annual report. For this reason, Cargill and Koch Industries are not included in the list, the two largest privately held US companies with estimated annual sales of $ 109.6 billion and $ 100.0 billion in fiscal 2010, respectively. For the same reason, a number of large international companies are also missing, including Saudi Aramco from the Middle East . With an estimated annual turnover of 182.4 billion US dollars, the state-owned oil company from Saudi Arabia was one of the ten largest companies in the world in fiscal year 2009. Since the ranking list mostly only takes listed companies into account and therefore a number of unlisted companies are missing, it is only of limited significance.

Since 1990 three corporations from the USA ( ExxonMobil , General Motors , Walmart ), one corporation from Japan ( Mitsubishi Corporation ) and one corporation from the Netherlands ( Royal Dutch Shell ) have been the largest companies in the world. DaimlerChrysler achieved the best placement for a German company in 1999. With sales of 154.6 billion US dollars, the company was ranked number two worldwide and number one in Europe.

There is no globally recognized uniform standard of assessment for the size of a company. Possible variables are turnover , market capitalization or the number of employees. Fortune chose sales. Fortune Global 500 competes with the Forbes Global 2000 and Financial Times Global 500 lists .
