Fox tone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fox tone (English foxy ) is a taste or smell note of American wild grapes and is mostly undesirable (in Europe). It is particularly noticeable in the species Vitis labrusca , which is also known as the fox vine.

The musky, earthy and sweet aroma is against the fox (English fox named). The term "foxy" developed into a collective term for all flavors of American wine varieties that differ from the usual flavors of European Vitis vinifera grapes.

The taste is also associated with strawberries (especially: wild strawberries), raspberries or sea buckthorn . In Swabian one speaks quite bluntly about the 'Katzensoicher' (Seich / Soich: urine).

In the Swiss canton of Ticino z. B. A wine is grown with the American direct carrier variety Isabella . This is why the Fox tone is also known as the Ticino note . In Tuscany there is a grape variety 'Fragole' (Fragola = strawberry), the taste of which probably goes back to a crossing with American vines.

The Uhudler from southern Austria's Burgenland is also made from the hybrid varieties Concord , Noah , Delaware , Othello , Elvira , Isabella and Ripatella . This wine may not be sold as quality wine , but must be declared as a table wine (in Austria: " wine ").
