François-Xavier Georges Joseph Marie Ghislain van der Straten Waillet, Baron van der Straten Waillet (* 22. January 1910 in Antwerp ; † 15. February 1998 in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert / Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe ) was a Belgian politician of the Christian People's Party (CVP), which was minister and ambassador several times.

Life

François-Xavier Georges Joseph Marie Ghislain van der Straten Waillet came from the Belgian branch of the Van der Straten-Ponthoz family and was a son of Baron Alphonse van der Straten-Waillet, who was mayor of Westmalle . After attending school, he himself began to study law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , where he obtained a doctorate in law in 1932 . Then he was director of the Association of Christian Employers and Managers VKW (Verbond van Kristelijke Werkgevers en Kaderleden) . In 1946 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the Christian People's Party (CVP) , where he represented the interests of the Antwerp district until 1952 .

On March 20, 1947 van der Straten Waillet became Foreign Trade Minister in the Spaak III government and held this ministerial office until November 19, 1948. In the subsequent Spaak IV government , he took over the office between November 27, 1948 and June 27, 1949 as Minister for Public Health and Family. On November 26, 1949, he replaced August De Schryver as chairman of the Christian People's Party and held this position until September 23, 1950, whereupon Théo Lefèvre succeeded him.

François-Xavier van der Straten Waillet then switched to the diplomatic service and in 1952 was initially Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in Argentina . After the embassy in Buenos Aires in 1953 to embassy was raised, he remained there until 1955 as the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. He was then Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Netherlands between 1955 and 1966 . He then served as Director General and Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1966 to 1969 and was finally Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Italy between 1969 and 1975 . With his retirement from the diplomatic service he was awarded the title of Honorary Ambassador to the King of the Belgians.

He was honored several times for his services and was, among other things, Grand Officer of the Order of Leopold , the Order of the Crown and the Order of Leopold II, as well as the bearer of the First Class Civil Medal. In addition, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion , the Order of Orange-Nassau and the House Order of Orange . He was also a holder of the Grand Cross of the New Year's Eve and the Honorary Sign for Services to the Republic of Austria .
