François Jules Pictet de la Rive (born September 27, 1809 in Geneva , † March 15, 1872 in Geneva) was a Swiss zoologist and paleontologist .

Live and act

He studied first in Geneva, and then with Georges Cuvier and Blainville in Paris . During his studies in Geneva he joined the Swiss Zofinger Association . On his return to Paris in Geneva, he worked with Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . In 1835 he was appointed professor of zoology and anatomy at the University of Geneva . Later he also taught geology and paleontology . His field of research was entomology and paleontology. In 1835 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1839 Pictet was introduced by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville as member number 155 of the Société cuviérienne . From 1848 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and from 1867 of the Académie des Sciences in Paris.

He was rector of the University of Geneva from 1847 to 1850 and from 1866 to 1868. For many years he was a member of the Geneva cantonal parliament, which he presided over in 1863 and 1864.

In his honor, Oswald Heer named the Triassic insect Chauliodites picteti HEER, 1864.

Pictet de la Rive was the cousin of the linguist Adolphe Pictet .
