François Méchali

François Méchali (born May 21, 1950 in Algiers ) is a French musician (conductor, bassist) who interprets both new music and creative jazz .

Méchali studied classical double bass at the Versailles Conservatory . In 1968 he founded the improvisation ensemble Cohelmec with Jean Cohen, Dominique Elbaz and his brother Jean-Louis , who later also belonged to Jean-François Canape , and worked in the field of new music with Antoine Duhamel . He also played with Mico Nissim , Anthony Braxton ( News from the 70s ), Joachim Kühn , Oliver Johnson , Manuel Villarroel ( Machi Oul Big Band ) and Robin Kenyatta .

In the following years he also worked with recognized jazz musicians such as Dave Burrell , Stu Martin , Enrico Rava , Steve Lacy , André Jaume , Michel Petrucciani , Byard Lancaster , Mike Zwerin and Jacques Di Donato . He founded a double bass player trio with Beb Guérin and Jean-François Jenny-Clark . He also accompanied Joe McPhee on his European tours ( Topology 1981, Oleo & a Future Retrospective 1982). From the mid-1980s he also gave concerts with Claudine François , began to compose more and more and since then has also been active as a conductor. With his wife Isabelle he founded the label Charlotte Records , on which he also published his own solo works and adaptations for large orchestra. He also worked in a trio with Jean-Luc Fillon and Barry Altschul .
