Francesco Apostoli

Francesco Apostoli (also Franz Apostoli , * 1755 in Venice , † February 25, 1816 there ) was an Italian writer .

Life

Francesco Apostoli studied political science . He was later offered to work in the office of the Doge's Palace , which he refused. Instead, he went traveling and so began an adventurous life. He wrote novels and plays with nobles from Germany and Italy in order to earn money.

In the long run, Apostoli could not earn his living this way. Therefore, he became a spy for the State Inquisition . Supporting the French Revolution , especially the Jacobins , he was expelled to Corfu in 1796 when this came to light . When the Republic of Venice fell, he was able to return.

Then Apostoli was appointed by the Cisalpine Republic as consul in Ancona . When he was on his way to take office, the Austrians captured him and took him to Kotor . When he was released, he was in San Marino d'affaires of the first consul.

Apostoli later wrote a letter in which he expressed himself in a republican style about Napoleon Bonaparte . When a police minister learned of the letter, Apostoli was forced to leave Paris within one day and France within eight days . That is why he lived impoverished in Milan in the period that followed .

Through his friends it was possible for him to become a book trade supervisor in Padua . But when the Austrians returned to the country, Apostoli had to leave again. He returned to Venice. There he became increasingly impoverished, but wrote other plays. Finally he starved to death in Venice in 1816.

Since 1775 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Act

With Storia d'Andrea and Sagezza della follia Apostoli wrote two novels . He reports on his imprisonment in Kotor in his book Lettere sirmiensi . He later wrote Storia degli Galli, Franchi e Francesi , for which three volumes were originally intended. Since the first was received very negatively, no further parts were published. Apostoli also wrote comedies , which, however, met with a positive reception.
