Frank-Patrick Steckel

Frank-Patrick Steckel (born February 10, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German director , artistic director , author and translator.

Career

Frank-Patrick Steckel studied art history in Hamburg . He gained his first experience at the student theater in Hamburg, where he met Claus Peymann . With him he worked as assistant director at the studio stage of the University of Erlangen and at the Theater an der Landwehr in Hamburg.

In the early 1970s he was one of the founding members of the Berlin Schaubühne on Halleschen Ufer . It was there that he began working with Peter Stein at Brecht's mother (1970) after Maxim Gorki, including an invitation to the Berlin Theatertreffen (1971). This was followed by Hugo von Hofmannsthal's The Rescued Venice (1972) together with Jan Kauenhowen, Bertolt Brecht's The Exception and the Rule (1973), Heiner Müller's Wage Pusher (1974) and The Downfall of the Egoist Fatzer after Brecht (1976), all at the Schaubühne. Of these, Die Mutter , Die Wohndrücker and the Frankfurter Arme Vetter were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen from 1978 .

Directorship

Under the management of Arno Wüstenhöfer , Steckel was senior director at the Bremen theater from 1978 to 1981 . There he directed, among others, Hans Henny Jahnn's The Coronation of Richard III. in the disused slaughterhouse in Bremen . In 1981 Steckel returned to the Berlin Schaubühne as a freelance director with Barlachs Der Blaue Boll and Ostrowskijs Wald . He also staged Hebbels Judith at the Münchner Kammerspiele in 1983 .

From 1986 to 1995 he succeeded Claus Peymann as director of the Bochumer Schauspielhaus , which he directed together with the choreographer Reinhild Hoffmann . His productions there include Timon von Athen by William Shakespeare (1990 and invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen 1991), Germania Tod in Berlin by Heiner Müller (1988), Brand by Henrik Ibsen (1993/1994) and, as the final production, Hamlet by William Shakespeare (1994 / 95). His successor in Bochum was Leander Haußmann in 1995 .

Since 1995 Steckel has been working as a freelance director again and has staged at the Vienna Academy Theater , the Schauspiel Köln , the Theater Bonn , the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Wuppertaler Schauspielhaus . In 2000, his Cologne Shakespeare production The Government of King Edward III. invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. Since 2008 Steckel has been working in Bremen again. There he staged at the Theater Bremen and at the theater laboratory .
