Franklin Rudolf Ankersmit (born March 20, 1945 in Deventer , the Netherlands) is a Dutch professor for intellectual history and historical theory at the University of Groningen .

From 1974 to 1992 he was an assistant professor at the University of Groningen before he was appointed full professor. In 2010 he retired. Since 1986 he has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). In 2011 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea . In 2009 he received the Order of Orange-Nassau .

subjects

Ankersmit deals mainly with contemporary historiography, the philosophy of history and the historical method . Its central concepts are narration , metaphor and representation . In many respects, it ties in with the work of Johan Huizinga , whom he counts among the forerunners of postmodern historiography because of the metaphor of his thinking and the narrative structured text of the autumn of the Middle Ages as well as because of his theoretical work .
