Franz Lamotte also: La Motte (* around 1751, † 7. September 1780 in The Hague ) was a from Flanders originating violinist and composer .

Life

According to Charles Burney , Franz Lamotte came from Flanders and is said to have been a student of the violinist Felice Giardini, who worked in London . A wealthy Englishman who recognized his talent is said to have adopted him, provided for his education and accompanied him on concert tours. In December 1766 he appeared in the Vienna Burgtheater. Empress Maria Theresia financed a longer concert tour for him, which took him to Prague, among other places. There he is said to have played a violin concerto by Bablizeck, the secretary of Prince von Fürstenberg, from the sheet. In Leipzig he performed his own works at a private concert in the house of the composer Johann Adam Hiller . From 1768 he stayed in several cities in Italy. Leopold Mozart reported in a letter dated June 30, 1770 (BD 194) about Lamotte's long stay in Naples. In 1769 Lamotte gave concerts in Paris. Here Lamotte suggested a concert with the violinist Giovanni Mane Giornovichi , in which each of the two should play one of the other's concerts from sight, which Giornovichi refused for fear of succumbing. From around 1770 Lamotte was concertmaster of the Vienna court orchestra , but continued his concert tours. So he appeared in Paris in 1773 and 1777 at the Concert spirituel . In 1776 and 1777 he had several appearances in London, including with the cellist Andreas Lidl and in 1778 with the soprano Venanzio Rauzzini . After the death of his adoptive father, Lamotte was arrested on account of debts and was able to flee to The Hague, where he died a short time later.
