Franz Ludwig Fleck (also François Louis Fleck ) (born February 8, 1824 in Niederbronn (now Niederbronn-les-Bains ), Alsace ; † October 27, 1899 in Metz , Lorraine ) was the 100th bishop of the diocese of Metz .

Life

Fleck was ordained priest on June 17, 1848 in Metz. His first position was as chaplain to Bolchen (now Boulay-Moselle ), then he was promoted to rector (Aumonier) of the girls' boarding school in Rüsdorf (now Rustroff ) near Sierck, and finally he became pastor to Walmen (now Valmont ) near St. Avold. He then got the job as archpriest in Busendorf (today Bouzonville ) and finally as city pastor in Metz, St. Martin. Ultimately, he was appointed as secretary in the Episcopal Curia of Metz. On May 13, 1881 he was appointed coadjutor of the Bishop of Metz with the right of succession and titular bishop of Sion . He was ordained episcopal by the Metz bishop Paul Georg Marie du Pont des Loges , whom he succeeded as the 100th Bishop of Metz when he died on August 18, 1886. On July 21, 1891, Bishop Fleck donated Adolf Fritzen , the newly appointed Shepherd of Strasbourg , the episcopal ordination and on the same day consecrated his chosen auxiliary bishop, Karl Marbach , as titular bishop of Paphus . Bishop Franz Ludwig Fleck died in Metz on October 27, 1899. The emperor's preferred candidate for his successor as Bishop of Metz was Franz Zorn von Bulach . That is what Pope Leo XIII wanted . Not. Kaiser Wilhelm II then enforced the German Benedictine and Prussian subjects Willibrord Benzler , who soon won the respect of his diocesans, as he consistently defended the interests of Alsace-Lorraine.

The Grünstadter Zeitung of November 9, 1899 reports that on November 6, at 10 a.m., the funeral of Bishop Fleck took place in the cathedral of Metz and Bishop Korum of Trier, in the presence of numerous German and French bishops, gave the funeral sermon in German and held in French.
