After his apprenticeship and journeyman time around 1500 in Freiberg, Franz Maidburg went on a hike , where he got to know Tilman Riemenschneider's Würzburg workshop around 1510/12 . Maidburg can be traced back to Freiberg in 1513 when he created the so-called Monhauptsche Madonna in Freiberg Cathedral (today in the Annenkapelle).

After that he worked mainly in the St. Anne's Church in Annaberg (1516 pulpit, 1518 portal of the old sacristy , 1519–22 gallery reliefs).

After completing the work, he returned to Freiberg, from where in 1525 he created the north portal of the Benedictine monastery church (today the castle church ) in Chemnitz using four figures by Hans Wittens . During this time Maidburg can also be found in Komotau ( Chomutov ) in Bohemia.

It remains to be seen whether Maidburg actually created the sacrament house attributed to him in Cologne Cathedral . The works in Fürstenwalde that were erroneously assigned to him are demonstrably not from Maidburg . Likewise, the tomb of Uriel von Gemmingen in Mainz, also assigned to him, shows no echoes of the style of the Saxon sculptor.
