Franz Mett

Franz Mett (born October 25, 1904 in Nickelnischken , Stallupönen district in East Prussia ; † August 21, 1944 in the Brandenburg prison ) was a German communist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Franz Mett attended elementary school from 1910 to 1918 and then worked as a miner in the Ruhr area and as a metal worker in Berlin. In 1926 he became a member of the KPD . When he became unemployed in 1929, he took on functions as a cashier and agitpro manager . In 1932 he married his girlfriend Johanna.

After the start of the fascist dictatorship in 1933, he continued his activities in the communist resistance underground. In 1934 he was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for “preparing for high treason” . From 1934 to 1937 he was in Luckau prison, where he met Robert Uhrig , with whom he built a new resistance group after his release from 1938. Together with Kurt Lehmann and Walter Budeus, he became the main coordinator of the resistance groups in the large Berlin companies and through this also had contacts to the resistance network of the Rote Kapelle . He was arrested by the Gestapo on February 4, 1942 and sentenced to death by the People's Court on June 7, 1944 . The judgment, which was not legally binding, was carried out on August 21, 1944 in the Brandenburg prison .

His grave is on the St. Marien and St. Nikolai Cemetery I in the Prenzlauer Berg district .

  • There is Franz-Mett-Strasse in Berlin-Lichtenberg .
  • Until the 1970s, there was also a memorial plaque on Mett's house at Mulackstrasse 8, which was placed on the eve of the day before the victims of fascism in 1958. The house was then torn down.
  • In Berlin-Mitte, Weinmeisterstraße 16, there was the Franz-Mett-Oberschule. After the reunification, the 1st comprehensive school in the middle was located in this building. Today the Waldorf School Center and other Waldorf education facilities are located there . There has been a memorial plaque on the school building since GDR times.
  • Also in Berlin-Mitte (Gormannstrasse 13) there is the Franz-Mett-Sporthalle .
