Franz Patat

Franz Xaver Maria Theresia Patat (born May 15, 1906 in Vienna , † December 11, 1982 in Wolfratshausen ) was an Austro-German chemist .

Life

After studying in Vienna and Göttingen , he received his doctorate in Vienna in 1930. From 1930 to 1934 he was assistant at the first chemical laboratory at the University of Vienna, from 1934 to 1936 assistant at the physico-chemical institute at the University of Göttingen. He completed his scientific training in 1936 with a habilitation in Göttingen in the field of physical chemistry . In the Höchst plant of IG Farben , he worked in process engineering for the development of plastics production. After a professorship for chemistry in Innsbruck from 1945, he was head of research at Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel. In 1952 he was appointed professor for technical chemistry at the TH Hannover . From 1956 until his retirement in 1970 he was head of the Institute for Technical Chemistry at what is now the Technical University of Munich . The central topic of his scientific work was polymer research.

From 1962 to 1964 he was also rector of the then TH Munich. From 1958 to 1966 he was a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the EEC . As rector designatus in Hanover and founding rector of the University of Regensburg , he also gave important impetus to the development of two other German universities.
