Franz Ronig

Franz Ronig (born September 11, 1927 in Troisdorf ; † May 21, 2019 in Trier ) was a Roman Catholic priest and art historian . For many years he was the diocesan curator and curator of the cathedral treasury in Trier .

Life

Franz Ronig grew up in Troisdorf and Cologne . After serving in the armed forces in the war, he entered the seminary in Trier in 1948 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology . After being ordained a priest on April 3, 1954, Ronig worked for nine years in practical pastoral care, namely as a chaplain in Saarbrücken- Christian King, parish assistant in Wiesbach - St. Augustinus , religion teacher at the Marschall-Ney-Schule in Saarbrücken, as a religion teacher at the grammar school of the Franciscan Sisters on the island of Nonnenwerth and as rector at the motherhouse of these Franciscan Sisters on the island of Nonnenwerth. On April 1, 1963, he was exempted from studying art at the University of Bonn . Ronig later moved to Saarbrücken University , where he worked as an assistant at the Art History Institute from May 1965. In 1966 he was awarded a doctorate with the dissertation “Verdun Illumination in the Twelfth Century” with the grade “magna cum laude”. phil. PhD.

Ronig became diocesan curator of the diocese of Trier in 1966 and in this position played a key role in the restoration of the Trier cathedral . From 1971 to 1997 he headed the Office for Church Monument Preservation in the Diocese of Trier. Since 1971, Ronig has also been the custodian of the Trier cathedral treasury and the commissioner for relics and continued in these offices until May 31, 2015 after his retirement. In 1973 he became vicar at Trier Cathedral, from 1994 cathedral chapter .

In addition to this activity, he taught art history as a lecturer and honorary professor at the Trier Theological Faculty and at the Universities of Trier and Saarbrücken.

Act

Ronig wrote numerous publications on various aspects of church art and monument preservation. He was known for his art history and theological lectures beyond the borders of the Trier diocese.

From 2001, Franz Ronig gradually handed over his extensive private library with more than 27,000 cataloged titles (as of early 2019) to the library of the Episcopal Seminary in Trier , where it is available to the public.

1978 Franz Ronig was from Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien de Furstenberg to Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem appointed and on May 6, 1978 Cologne Cathedral by Franz Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy invested. Ronig was a member of the German Association of the Holy Land .
