Franz Rudolf von Monschaw

Maria Franz Rudolf Johann Nepomuk Theodor Valentin Simeon von Monschaw (born February 18, 1760 in Cologne , † April 8, 1841 ibid) was a German politician and Lord Mayor of Cologne.

Life

Franz Rudolf von Monschaw was the son of the electoral Cologne privy councilor imperial knight Johann Heinrich Joseph von Monschaw and the baroness Maria Regina von Bentzel-Sternau. In 1787 he married Josephine von Mercken. After her untimely death he married Karoline Ursula von Erlenwein in 1794.

Franz Rudolf von Monschaw completed his studies and then entered the military. On May 19, 1780 he became a subordinate in the Electoral Palatinate army. There he rose to captain in 1785, adjutant to a general in 1786 and finally major in 1794. In the same year he resigned from the army after the death of his father. In the course of the Napoleonic Wars , von Monschaw was appointed head of the second cohort of the 3rd French Legion in 1805. In 1813 he handed the city of Cologne over to the Russian armed forces and was then commander of the city militia. In 1815 he was appointed the first alderman or mayor of the city of Cologne. For his services to the city, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle by King Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1818 .
