Franz West (politician)

Franz West (born December 24, 1909 in Magdeburg , † 1984 in Vienna ), actually Franz Weintraub, was an Austrian politician and publicist.

Franz West was active in his youth in the Association of Socialist Middle School Students and as a law student in the Association of Socialist Students in Austria . In 1933 he joined the KPÖ and in 1938 fled to England via Czechoslovakia . From 1941 he was president of the Free Austrian Movement there . After his return to Austria in 1945 he became a member of the Politburo of the KPÖ and from 1965 editor-in-chief of the KPÖ newspaper Volksstimme . In 1969 he distanced himself from the KPÖ and turned to Eurocommunism and the participation in the “ Wiener Tagebuch ”. He worked for the documentation archive of the Austrian resistance .
