Franz Xaver Lehner (born November 29, 1904 in Regensburg ; † July 19, 1986 in Fürstenfeldbruck ) was a German composer and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school, Lehner studied composition and organ at the Munich University of Music . He took up his first position as a choir musician in Landsberg am Lech. From 1938 he trained organists in his hometown. Ten years later he received a professorship for music theory at the Bavarian State Conservatory in Würzburg . From 1958 on he worked as a professor of composition at the Munich University of Music.

In addition to his instrumental works - orchestral works and chamber music - his mostly cheerful operas have attracted attention. He had the greatest success with the buffo opera The Clever Susanne , composed in 1951 , which came on stage for the first time on January 13th in Nuremberg and was soon welcomed by many opera houses in German-speaking countries as a welcome addition to the repertoire.

Lehner's music is characterized by the fact that it is simply structured and melodious. It does not make any special demands on the listener and is therefore easily accessible to a larger group of people. Lehner's students included Nicolaus A. Huber , Walther Prokop , Walter Haupt and Helmut Bieler . Today both Lehner and his works are largely forgotten.
