history
When the Frankfurt Rebstock airfield in the 1930s, its capacity limits reached, was in 1936 in the city forest of flight and the airship port Rhein-Main built.
After the airport had not been completely destroyed in World War II , shortly after the establishment of the US Air Base in 1947, the Rhein-Main Public Transport Company (VAG) was founded and a parallel runway system was completed.
With the economic miracle in the 1950s, the VAG changed its name to Flughafen Frankfurt / Main AG (FAG). The expansion of the West runway in the 1970s and 1980s led to violent conflicts between the airport operator and the environmental movement.
In 1997 FAG signed a contract with the Philippine government for the construction and operation of the planned new Terminal 3 of the Ninoy-Aquino-Airport in Manila , the so-called Manila Terminal Project. The agreement envisaged building the terminal together with local partners and then operating it exclusively for 25 years. The total investment amount of around 350 million euros later had to be written off completely. Public prosecutors later investigated allegations of corruption and breach of trust against managers of the company in Germany, but they were reinstated.
In 2001 the company was partially privatized through an IPO and renamed Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide . Since December 2012, the corporate headquarters has been located in a new building costing 57 million euros at Gate 3 of Frankfurt Airport.

Airport holdings
The company holds stakes in the airports of Antalya (51% voting rights participation) in Turkey , Lima (70%) in Peru and the Bulgarian airports of Burgas and Varna (60% each). At the beginning of 2006, a consortium with Fraport's stake of 10% was awarded the contract for the long-term operation of New Delhi Airport in India . At the beginning of 2010, a consortium with Fraport's participation of 35.5% was awarded the contract for the long-term operation of St. Petersburg Airport in Russia . The Frankfurt-based company has held a 24.5% stake in Xi'an Airport (People's Republic of China) since September 2008 . The 100% subsidiary Fraport Saudi Arabia was responsible for the management, operation and further development of Jeddah Airport and Riyadh Airport until the end of June 2014 .
A management contract to operate the airport in Cairo, Egypt ended in January 2014.
On March 16, 2015, Fraport took over 100% of Ljubljana Airport .
Greece
As early as 2000, what was then FAG took a minority stake in Athens Airport . It was one of the first investments of today's Fraport outside of Frankfurt.
On November 25, 2014, it was announced that Fraport and the Copelouzos Group had been awarded the contract to operate 14 Greek airports for 40 years. Fraport / Copelouzos sat down u. a. by against the bidding groups Holding Corporation America / Metka and Vinci / Ellaktor. The operator of the 14 Greek national airports is Fraport Greece SA, the shares are distributed as follows: 73.4% Fraport AG and 26.6% Copelouzos Group. The airports are in Thessaloniki , Aktio , Kavala and Chania as well as the airports of the islands of Kefalonia , Corfu , Kos , Lesbos, Mykonos , Rhodes , Samos , Santorini , Skiathos and Zakynthos .
The Greek state remains the landowner and retains a 28.5% stake in the operating business. In addition to the purchase price of EUR 1.234 billion, Fraport committed to invest a further EUR 400 million in the airports by 2021. The handover of the airports was completed in early 2017. Attac criticized the terms of the contract because, in their opinion, the Greek state must bear high risks, while Fraport, on the other hand, takes the profits.

Former holdings
In Manila, the Philippine project company Piatco, in which Fraport had a 30 percent stake, won the contract to build and operate the third terminal. Shortly before completion, the project was expropriated by the Philippine Supreme Court in 2003 on the grounds of corruption. In 2011, a Philippine court awarded Fraport USD 175 million in compensation. The international arbitration tribunal ICSID decided in February 2015 that Fraport was not entitled to compensation because national laws were deliberately disregarded. The state's highest court ruled in 2015 that the consortium had to be compensated with the Fraport minority stake. In October 2016, Fraport was paid USD 270 million in compensation.
With retroactive effect from January 1, 2009, Fraport transferred its 65 percent stake in Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, which is around 100 kilometers from Frankfurt, to the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for economic reasons . The cooperation with the Hunsrück airport will be continued, however, as this serves as an alternative for night flights.
In June 2012 it was announced that Fraport intends to dispose of its 10 percent stake in New Delhi Airport . There are already negotiations with the Indian infrastructure group GMR. The reasons given were the expiry of the operating license in 2013 and the closure of Fraport's offices in India.
In August 2018, Fraport sold its 30% stake in Hanover Airport to a British financial investor (with effect from October 9, 2018).
Competitors
Fraport competes with German and international airport operators for stakes in airports. These include the French Vinci , the Canadian Avialliance (formerly Hochtief Airport), the British Heathrow Airport Holdings (formerly BAA) and the Australian Macquarie Airports.
However, the company is also in direct competition with other German airports, in particular Munich Airport , for Lufthansa’s volumes.
In addition, there is competition between the air and rail modes of transport within Germany and on some routes (e.g. Frankfurt-Paris).
criticism
Fraport is currently being criticized primarily by residents of Frankfurt Airport due to the expansion and the associated exposure to aircraft noise and pollutants.
The Süddeutsche Zeitung also reported in February 2017 that several of the company's letterbox companies were registered in Malta , which saves the company taxes in Germany.
In January 2018, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on the work of the European Research Association for Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT), which, among other things, made monkeys inhale diesel exhaust gases in an experiment. The head of the Environmental Impacts Department at Fraport AG was also on the board of the association until the end of 2014. Everyone in the club knew about the monkey test with a VW Beetle. In an EUGT report on the work from 2012 to 2015, inhalation experiments with monkeys lasting several hours are openly described.
Sponsorship
Since it was founded, Fraport has been a sports sponsor, mainly in the Rhine-Main area . Fraport was the main sponsor of Eintracht Frankfurt from 2001 to 2012 and has been a premium sponsor ever since. Fraport also supports FSV Frankfurt , 1. FFC Frankfurt and Kickers Offenbach . In June 2011 Fraport announced that it would also invest in basketball for the 2011/2012 season. The basketball players from Frankfurt, previously known as Deutsche Bank Skyliners , have been playing in the Bundesliga since 2011 as Fraport Skyliners . In addition, Fraport secured the naming rights for the Skyliners' venue, the Frankfurt Ball Sports Hall . This has been called the Fraport Arena since 2011 .
In the field of art and culture, Fraport supports the Rheingau Music Festival , the Weilburg Palace Concerts and the Centralstation in Darmstadt.
