Fred Espenak (* 1953 ) is an American astrophysicist . He worked at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) until 2009 and was v. a. known for his calculations and catalogs of solar eclipses .

His interest in this topic arose when he observed the solar eclipse of March 7, 1970 - and at least 20 other eclipses since then. Because of his numerous publications in this regard, he is often referred to as Mr Eclipse in professional circles .

When he was 10 years old, he built his first telescope. After the baccalaureate at Wagner College (Staten Iceland) he worked in the Planetarium , later in the Kitt Peak National Observatory and received his Master diploma at the University of Toledo on eruptive stars. During his long time at GSFC, he observed the bodies of the solar system and the atmospheres of the planets with the infrared spectrometer . From 1978 he worked on the eclipse bulletins of NASA and edited several darkness canon as the Fifty Year Canon of Solar Eclipses: 1986-2035 and the Fifty Year Canon of Lunar Eclipses: 1986-2035 . Together with Jean Meeus, he published the Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses in 2006 , which contains solar eclipses of all types from −2000 to +3000, and in 2009 the Five Millennium Canon of Lunar Eclipses , which lists all lunar eclipses during this period. More recently Espenak published the Thousand Year Canon of Lunar Eclipses 1501 to 2500 , the Thousand Year Canon of Solar Eclipses 1501 to 2500 and the 21st Century Canon of Solar Eclipses .

In 2003 the asteroid (14120) Espenak was named after him.
