Athletic career

Fred Kennedy, who was born in Black Lane near the city of Radcliffe in the Greater Manchester area , first played in the amateur field for Rossendale United , which is also in the region , before he made his first professional appearances in the 1923/24 season with the then second division Manchester United . Mostly used in the right half-forward position, but occasionally also coming from the left, he made his debut against Oldham Athletic on October 6, 1923 . The second mission followed four months later, but it was the start of further games at significantly shorter intervals. This included two appearances within a week against the third division promoted FC Nelson at the beginning of March 1924 , where he scored the first goal of his professional career on March 1, 1924 (final score 2-0). The last year just missed ascent was clearly out of reach with 14th place in the end, but in the subsequent 1924/25 season Kennedy contributed eleven games to winning the runner-up. However , he missed the decisive phase for promotion to the First Division due to his early departure in March 1925 to Everton FC .

The "Toffees" from Liverpool were on the desperate search for powerful strikers and in this context they also came across Kennedy, who made his debut on March 18, 1925 against Notts County (1-0) and only three days later at 1: 3 defeat against Arsenal FC scored his first goal - a certain Dixie Dean was also here for the first time in the ranks of Everton FC. In the following season 1925/26 Kennedy played 13 of the first 15 league games by early November 1925, but then lost his place to Jack O'Donnell and the following year to Arthur Dominy . The next stop was from the 1927/28 season at the first division competitor FC Middlesbrough , with whom Kennedy was relegated to the second division at the end of the season , but a year later the second division championship returned to the top English division, to which Kennedy had contributed five goals . Instead of following his club in the First Division, he moved within the second division to Reading FC and a year later also in the Second Division to Oldham Athletic.

After intermediate stops outside of professional football at ex-club Rossendale United and Northwich Victoria , Kennedy then moved to France to the capital club RC Paris . There he completed a total of 16 league matches in the 1932/33 season before returning to England for the first division club Blackburn Rovers the following year . Right from the start he was a regular for the "Rovers" in coach Arthur Barritt's team and was only missing twice in the first 31 league games. He scored eight goals, although no further appearances followed. Instead, he rejoined the Racing Club Paris, where he finally celebrated his greatest successes. In the 1935/36 season he won the French championship and the cup . After another year in France, he let his active career end in the 1937/38 season with the English second division club Stockport County .
