Frederik Pijper

Fredrik Pijper (born January 9, 1859 in Hoogwoud , † February 26, 1926 in Rotterdam ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian and church historian.

Life

Fredrik was the son of the mayor Cornelis Pijper (born May 11, 1830 in Hoogwoud; † May 10, 1907 ibid.) And Grietje Appel (born January 19, 1830 in Hoogwoud; † July 11, 1863 ibid.). Initially he attended school in De Weere , received private lessons from 1871 and passed his university entrance exam. On September 30, 1876, he enrolled at the University of Leiden to study theology. To this end, he first attended the lectures at the philosophical faculty with Carel Gabriel Cobet , Willem Georg Pluijgers (born February 18, 1812 in Zwolle, † April 30, 1880 in Leiden), Matthias de Vries and Henricus Oort . He received theological instructions from Johannes Henricus Scholten , Abraham Kuenen Cornelis Petrus Tiele and Johannes Gerhardus Rijk Acquoy (born January 3, 1829 in Amsterdam; † December 15, 1896 in Leiden).

After passing parish exams in Gelderland, he took over a pastor's position in Eenigenburg on June 1, 1882 . When he had defended the work Jan Utenhove, zijn leven en zijn werken (German: Jan Utenhove, his life and his works ) in Leiden , he received his doctorate in theology on March 1, 1883. In 1884 he took over a pastor's position in Kimswerd , in 1886 he moved to a pastor's position in Veendam and in 1890 he became a pastor in Berkhout . Since he had drawn attention to himself with several publications, he was appointed professor of church history at the University of Leiden on February 20, 1897, which task he carried out on February 20, 1897 with the introductory speech De geschiedenis van het godsdienstig-zedelijk leven (German: The story of the religious-moral life ) took over. He mainly worked on topics related to the history of the Catholic Church and the time of the Reformation in the Netherlands.

He also founded the Church History Society in Leiden in 1901, was a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden in 1884, belonged to the Dutch Mission Society from 1901 to 1926 and became a member of the provincial Utrecht Society for the Arts and Sciences. He was also involved in the Dutch Association against Prostitution and in 1912 became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . Many of his works have appeared in the theological journals and journals of his time. He himself worked from 1896 as editor of the Nederlandsch Archief voor Kerkgeschiedenis (German: Dutch Archive for Church History) and in 1911/12 he worked as rector of the Alma Mater on the organizational tasks of the Leiden University, for which he gave the rector's speech on February 8, 1912 . -k. en de prot. voorstellingen van het oudste christendom (German: The Roman Catholic and Protestant ideas of ancient Christianity) held. On July 8, 1924, he resigned his professorship for health reasons and was retired on September 15, 1924. Afterwards he lived in Noordwijk-Binnen, Haarlem and Heemstede. He died in Eudokia Hospital in Rotterdam.

Pijper married on May 24, 1882 in Leiden with Maria Petronella van Wijk (* December 17, 1858 in Leiden; † February 22, 1924), the daughter of the teacher Johannes Dirk van Wijk (* October 7, 1832 in Leiden; † 28 November 1907 in The Hague) and his wife Christina Adriana Bolland, who married on February 17, 1858 (born November 20, 1836 in Leiden, † January 6, 1913 in The Hague). There are four sons and two daughters from the marriage. From the children we know:

  • Johannes Dirk Pijper (born December 13, 1884 in Kimswerd) lived in The Hague
  • Adrianus Pijper (born March 11, 1886 in Kimswerd, † January 12, 1964 in Pretoria) was Professor of Medicine, married. October 8, 1913 with Nelly Margaretha Marie Kluijver (born July 4, 1891 in Amsterdam)
