The Freedom Hall is a multi-purpose arena in Louisville , Kentucky on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center . Between December 1956 and 2010 the arena was home to the "Louisville Cardinals", the sports team of the University of Louisville , for men's basketball. The hall has also hosted the NCAA Basketball Final Four tournament six times .

The arena was opened in 1956 and has been renovated several times since then. In 1984 the hall floor was lowered by three meters, so that the audience capacity could be increased from 16,613 to 18,749 today for basketball games and 19,169 for concerts. The record crowd for a basketball game was reached on January 21, 2006 with 20,091 spectators in a game of the Cardinals against the University of Connecticut . Over the years the arena has been used by various franchises , including the Louisville Rebels from the International Hockey League , the Kentucky Colonels from the American Basketball Association, and the Louisville Panthers from the American Hockey League . The last professional team to use the hall as their home stadium were the Louisville Fire from the second-rate arena football league af2 .
