history

1901-1945

The association was founded on May 30, 1901 under the name Augsburger Verein für Luftschiffahrt e. V. (AVfL). The entry in the register of associations took place with a decision of the royal district court Augsburg on August 12, 1901 with 29 members.

On April 1, 1902, August von Parseval, chairman , had 114 members; including August Riedinger , the founder of the Augsburg balloon factory .

On October 1, 1937, the gas balloons "Augusta IV" and "Augusta V" were expropriated in favor of the newly founded NSFK .

After the last trip of the "Augusta IV" free balloon on August 24, 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War , operations were suspended until 1952. The route manager and pilot of the last free balloon trip, Ernst Frank Sr. stored the "Augusta IV" and "Augusta V" balloons and saved them until 1945.

From 1945

In 1945 Ernst Frank sen. the aging balloons on the mediation of the American military government against machine tools, which he in turn sold on behalf of the association in 1952 to finance the new free balloon "Augusta VI".

Balloon pennant

On September 10, 1952, the Freiballonverein Augsburg e. V. formerly Augsburg Association for Aviation, founded in 1901, entered in the register of associations. The new “Augusta VI” free balloon was christened on October 19, 1952 from the Rosenaustadion to Achsheim ; The balloon pilot was again Ernst Frank Sr. The balloon baptism, which was postponed several times due to the weather, met with great interest from the population. The current status of the preparations was reported on Bavarian radio and in the newspapers. The Augsburg tram carried yellow "balloon pennants" onto their car on the Sunday morning of the planned balloon baptism in order to show the population the planned ascent of the balloon.

In 1976 the 1st gas balloon world championship was held and in 1984 the first hot air balloon was procured for the club.

The writer, cabaret artist and painter Joachim Ringelnatz took part in a race with car tracking as a guest on June 10, 1928. This resulted in his poem Free balloon ride with car tracking .

On May 27, 1931, after taking off from Augsburg , the Swiss professor Auguste Piccard reached 15,785 m in a stratospheric balloon. On board was his assistant, engineer Paul Kipfer. The journey ended after 17 hours on the Hochgurgler Glacier in the Tyrolean Ötztal.

Joseph William Kittinger , who set several world records in aviation, is a member of the FVA. He holds the following world records, which have not been exceeded to this day: Highest balloon flight with an open gondola, highest speed of a person without a special protective cover, longest free fall and longest parachute jump.
