Free pawn (Middle Ages)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a pawn was in the Middle Ages, a farmer called, had their own reason or those of a landlord had leased.

In contrast to the serfs and bondsmen no direct dependency ratio was the pawn to its landlords. He could determine his place of residence, his spouse or his working conditions himself. For this, yeoman farmers were obliged to do military service and tax payments to their rulers. The free farmers were usually the wealthiest and most important people in the village.
