French Hill (2007)

Ha-Givʿah ha-Zarfatit ( English French Hill ; Hebrew הַגִּבְעָה הַצַּרְפָּתִית ha-Givʿah ha-Zarfatīt , German 'the French hill' , also Givʿat Schapīrā in Hebrew גִּבְעַת שָׁפִּּירָא; Arabic name: Karm el-Wiz ) is a district in East Jerusalem. It is located northeast of the old town and borders the Scopusberg .

history

Before the annexation by the Israeli state, there was a Jordanian military post on the area . After the conquest in the 6-day war , the area was developed as a residential area for Jewish settlers. 6,631 people currently live in this district, which corresponds to a population density of 10,900 people per square kilometer. Most of the residents come from the territory of the Soviet Union and South America.

French Hill was annexed to Israel in 1980 by the Jerusalem Act . This annexation was declared “null and void” in UN Security Council Resolution 478 . In its Advisory Opinion on the "Legal Consequences of Building a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territories", the International Court of Justice made it clear that all Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories (which in the opinion of the court also includes East Jerusalem) are illegal under international law.

French Hill was the site of several attacks on civilians from 1992 to 2004 that left more than 40 victims.
