The Friendship Bridge ( Arabic جسر المحبة Jisr al-Mahabba ,DMG Ǧisr al-Maḥabba , engl. alsoQatar-Bahrain Causeway) is abridgeunder constructionbetweenQatarandBahrain. With the completion of the bridge, a direct rail and road connection between the two countries will be created for the first time, reducing the travel time by car to one hour. Without the bridge, a detour with a journey time of five hours via mainlandSaudi Arabia hasto be accepted.

With a length of 45 kilometers, the Friendship Bridge is to be the longest bridge in the world over water . It should have two lanes and a hard shoulder in each direction of travel, plus two tracks for freight and passenger trains. The passenger train from Doha to Manama is planned as a high-speed train with a top speed of 350 km / h. The German railway has secured this billion-dollar contract with delivery of trains worth 17 billion euros, which is currently sluggish.

The bridge was initially estimated to cost US $ 2.7 billion and construction was scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2010. Due to the financial crisis and the unresolved question of which rail technology will be used, the start of construction was initially postponed. Construction work began on the Qatar side in 2011, while Bahrain was still suffering from the consequences of the financial crisis and the connection in Bahrain was abandoned. Construction was expected to take four and a half years and cost $ 3 billion. Completion is not expected before 2022.Template: future / in 2 years
