Frido Mětšk

Frido Mětšk (born October 4, 1916 in Annaberg ; † July 9, 1990 in Bautzen , German Alfred Mietzschke ) was a Sorbian writer, historian, editor, narrator, poet and translator.

Live and act

Frido Mětšk was born in 1916 as the son of a commercial clerk in Annaberg. From 1927 to 1936 he attended the Kreuzgymnasium Dresden and from 1936 to 1937 the college for teacher training in Frankfurt (Oder) . He then studied classical philology , history and Slavic studies in Halle and Jena until 1940 . In 1940 he received his doctorate degree from Dmitrij Tschižewskij with a thesis on the theologian Heinrich Milde (1676–1739) in Halle. phil. PhD . After a short time in school as a student trainee and assessor in Keilhau and Halle, he was a soldier in World War II from 1941 to 1945 . He was taken prisoner by the Soviets and worked there as a lecturer at an anti-fascist school . In 1949 he returned to Germany to become director of the Sorbian Extended High School in Bautzen . From 1955 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sorbian Folk Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . From 1959 he was head of the Sorbian Cultural Archives. In 1964 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the Kurmärkisch-Wendish district. In 1960 he received the Ćišinski Prize and in 1969 he was awarded the Kashubian Stolema Medal of the VR Poland. In 1986 he retired. He is the father of the composer Juro Mětšk .

Works

Mětšk published collections of poetry, prose writings as well as literary and historical works. He also translated Kashubian , Lithuanian and Latvian poems into Sorbian.
