Friedensdorf International eV is an aid organization in Oberhausen and Dinslaken that brings sick and injured children from war and crisis areas to Germany for medical care. After the treatment is over, the children return to their families.

history

The association was founded on July 6, 1967 by citizens of Oberhausen on the occasion of the Six-Day War and started its work as the citizens' initiative Aktion Friedensdorf eV . The aim was to provide fast, unbureaucratic aid to the most innocent victims of wars and crises. The work concentrated on the victims of the Vietnam War after the end of the Six Day War . At the time, accommodations (the Friedensdorf) were being built in Oberhausen for children who needed further care (rehabilitation) after treatment. In addition to helping the Vietnamese children in Germany, eleven peace villages, schools and almost 100 health stations were created in various provinces of Vietnam. In the meantime, these projects work largely independently of the Friedensdorf and on the local partners' own initiative.

Since the founding of the Peace Village, further fields of activity have been added. Today there are three main areas:

  • Individual medical help for injured and sick children whose care is not possible in their home countries.
  • Planning and organization of aid projects in war and crisis areas to improve local medical care.
  • Peace policy work to promote humanitarian awareness and social engagement.

For individual aid, children are brought to Germany and treated free of charge in one of the numerous cooperating European hospitals. This is followed by rehab in the Friedensdorf Oberhausen before the children return to their homeland. Around 1000 children per year are looked after by the facility, i.e. taken in or brought back to their home country. The main countries of operation today are Angola and Afghanistan . In April 1987, Afghan children from a refugee camp in Pakistan came to Germany for the first time , and at the beginning of 2010 the 60th aid mission took place at the Hindukush .

The aid projects primarily serve to provide medical and humanitarian care in war and crisis areas. Peace villages, basic health stations, orthopedic workshops are being built. In Cambodia , for example, twelve basic health stations are already operating successfully. The Peace Village promotes this financially and logistically and then passes it on to non-governmental partner organizations on site.

The Friedensdorf Bildungswerk is a recognized provider of family education in North Rhine-Westphalia, with a focus on peace education, development policy, intercultural encounters and global learning for families, school classes and adults.

In addition, clothing collections are carried out. A large part of the clothing is used for the aid projects, another part is sold in the inter-shops of the Peace Village; the proceeds go to work for the children from war and crisis areas.

Since 1997, the association has organized a package campaign for people in need in the Caucasus and Central Asia every year with the help of the population .

The association has five “ambassadors”: actor Günter Lamprecht , goalkeeper legend Hans Tilkowski , former NRW labor minister Harald Schartau , Heinz Klaus Strick and the famous Japanese actress and entertainer Chizuru Azuma .

Foundation, endowment

The Friedensdorf Foundation was set up in 2001 and has been used to financially support aid projects in crisis areas since then.

DZI donation seal

The German Central Institute for Social Issues has been awarding the DZI donation seal annually since 1991, and the Friedensdorf has received this seal of approval ever since.
